HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital gives Shining Star Award for Competency

SHELBYVILLE, IL – HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital is committed to following its mission of quality health care and service to the community with a particular commitment to its core values of respect, care, competence and joy. To ensure that this becomes a standard practice in service, the hospital will recognize a colleague each quarter as a Most Valuable Person (MVP). This colleague’s attitude and behavior will reflect the hospital’s Franciscan mission, values and philosophy.

Each quarter’s nomination will be based on one of the HSHS four core values. This quarter the hospital’s nominating committee accepted nominations for the third core value, COMPETENCE. As defined by the sisters, competence embodies the concern, compassion, and sensitivity with which we care for patients as individuals on a one-to-one basis. It depicts our way of dealing with patients, clients, colleagues and co-workers.

The nominations are made by fellow colleagues and then selected by the Shining Star committee which is also comprised of colleagues. The quarter’s MVP is Leslie Fathauer, laboratory department.

“Leslie has served at Great Shepherd Hospital for 39 years as a phlebotomist. She is a natural born phlebotomist! Phlebotomy is not a practice people commonly enjoy. Most of the times, our patients come to us very anxious and frightened,” one colleague wrote on their nomination. “However, Leslie’s confidence and pride of being a good phlebotomist seem to relax patients. Her excellent reputation has brought patients from in-town and out to come to seek her care at Good Shepherd, especially frightened parents with sick children. Also, she always thinks ahead in a lot of situations with emergency department and inpatients. For example, when she sees a patient with a fever, she would draw some extra blood culture tubes for the patient when needed. This extra blood draw saves one less stick for the patient, as well as for the other phlebotomists and techs.”

Another colleague said, “Leslie is not only competent in what she does, but she displays all four core values at HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital. She has been the first welcoming face to many new colleagues and leaves a lasting impression with all who meet her.”

Leslie’s competent attributes are making a difference in colleagues’ and patients’ lives each day. Her exceptional service mirrors the Franciscan sisters’ compassion for people they served in their hospitals, and their care emulated the care Jesus shared with others during His earthly life.

As the sisters “Pass the Torch” to the hospital’s colleagues to continue their ministry, they are proud of Fathauer for her heart, genuine spirit, and sincere interest in the people she serves at HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital.
