HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital Provides Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, more than all forms of cancer combined. To prevent heart disease and increase awareness of its effects, HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital is proudly participating in American Heart Month.

Risk factors for cardiovascular disease include age, family history, smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

“Symptoms vary widely, and some heart disease goes undetected until a catastrophic event such as a heart attack or sudden death,” said Kristin Hayden, PA-C at HSHS Good Shepherd Family Health, Affiliate of HSHS Medical Group. “This makes preventive measures all the more important.”

You can make healthy changes to lower your risk of developing heart disease. Controlling and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease. To lower your risk:
  • Watch your weight.
  • Quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke.
  • Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.
  • Get active and eat healthy.
“We have to remind people to prioritize self-care, to carve out time to relax and unwind in the interest of heart health,” Hayden added.

Look for outlets such as regular exercise, which could be as simple as walking, a support group of family and friends and hobbies and activities that bring joy.
